ST. KITTS AND NEVIS
The twin island state of St. Kitts and Nevis is located in the Lesser Antilles in the Eastern Caribbean and forms part of an archipelago of sun-drenched islands. St. Kitts, also known as Saint Christopher is 69 square miles (179 km2) with Nevis being 32 square miles (83 km2). The islands are separated by a two-mile (3.2 km) channel known as the “Narrows” across which there is easy travel through excellent daily ferry services that accommodate both persons and cars as well as private water taxis.
The capital cities of St. Kitts and Nevis are Basseterre and Charlestown respectively, both being quaint in nature with cobbled sidewalks and a wealth of history on display. The islands boast lush forests and vegetation and beautiful beaches. They offer magnificent historical sites and landmarks to explore including the Circus Monument which adorns Fort Street, the main thoroughfare in Basseterre and the Museum of Nevis History in Charlestown.
The Federation was formerly a colony of Britain and gained independence on the 19th September 1983. St. Kitts is also known as the “Gibraltar of the West Indies” on account of its fortifications built during the 17th and 18th centuries. The Brimstone Hill Fortress and National Park is acclaimed as the largest fortress in the Eastern Caribbean and is designated as a UNECSO World Heritage Site. Nevis is dubbed the “Queen of the Caribees” by virtue of the tremendous wealth that was generated from its sugar plantations.
